Medium severity Malware

Browser Hijacker

Rewrites the homepage, search engine and new-tab behaviour, then tracks everything typed.

Overview

Hijackers arrive bundled with free software and persist through extension permissions that the user granted without reading.\nBeyond the annoyance, they redirect searches through affiliate links, inject ads, and can route logins through a proxy that records them.\nRemoving the extension is only half the job: the bundler usually reinstalls it.

Indicators of Compromise

  • Unknown extensions with "read and change all your data" rights
  • Search engine reset after every cleanup
